The Amidah — Opening

The start of the Amidah, the standing prayer at the heart of every service: a whispered request for words, then the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Adonai s'fatai tiftach, ufi yagid t'hilatecha.

Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

A single verse, said quietly just before the Amidah — asking for the words to come.

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu v'Elohei avoteinu, Elohei Avraham, Elohei Yitzchak, v'Elohei Ya'akov.

Blessed are You, Lord our God and God of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob.

The Amidah opens by naming the patriarchs — the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
