Keeping Shabbat
On Shabbat, the Amidah's weekday requests give way to rest. These Torah verses — sung in the service — call keeping Shabbat an eternal covenant, a sign between God and Israel.
V'shamru v'nei Yisrael et haShabbat, la'asot et haShabbat l'dorotam b'rit olam.
The children of Israel shall keep the Shabbat, observing it through their generations as an eternal covenant.
