Lighting the Shabbat Candles
The blessing said over the Shabbat candles — the act that begins Shabbat in the home. Same six-word opening as every blessing, then four new words.
Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the light of Shabbat.
Said after lighting the candles — many cover their eyes, say the blessing, then open them to greet the light.
